There are many benefits to living in a simple and minimal environment. Lack of clutter helps us focus and boosts our mood. Have you ever sat down at your desk at work or in your home office and felt like you just couldn't get any work done and started tidying up instead? It might be a good idea to listen to that impulse and make your work environment a more productive place. In this article we're going to give you some tips for making your home office a distraction-free, minimal sanctuary. At the same time, these tips will be low cost--minimalism and frugality go hand in hand after all.

Why minimalism?

If you're the type of person who lives in a "well-organized mess" and is able to function highly in this environment, maybe you don't need to strip things down. Or, if you feel the most comfortable in a busy room and are able to get more work done this way, maybe the busy and cozy office environment works for you. However, the majority of people don't fit that description. We tend to do our best work when we have only the necessities at had. Having a minimal home office has numerous benefits. Aside from helping you focus and adding a spacious, pleasant atmosphere to the room, minimalism can help your room look more updated and modern (increasing the value of your home), and can help you save money once you start making only the most useful purchases for your home office.

Your office as a workshop

If you work on cars in your garage and nothing else, you'll probably only want to fill your garage with the right tools for the job. This is also true for your home office. We have a tendency of putting old and extra furniture and decorations from our house into the less frequented rooms, like a home office. Look around your office. Has it become a storage room for old pillows, lamps, or furniture? If so, this is your chance to get rid of some items to clear up the room. Unlike your garage, the tools for the job needed in your home office have been extremely cut down thanks to technology. Among the items that laptops and smartphones have made obsolete:
  • filing cabinets--Google Drive and Dropbox can securely store all your documents
  • calculators--your phone and laptop have these
  • staplers
  • hole punches
  • landline telephones
  • bulletin boards
  • desktop calendars and planners
This list goes on and on. If you have the equivalent or a replacement on your laptop, there's no need to clutter your room with it.

Minimal decorating

Since simple living and minimalism are current trends there are a range of resources available to you when looking to revamp your home office. Some decorating tips to help you along the way:
  • Shop modular. Modular furniture from stores like IKEA and VITSOE are great space savers.
  • Keep your surfaces clear. Avoid the urge to cover your desk with items. That goes for tables, floors, walls, and ceilings as well.
  • Think about color. Using bright colors for your walls and ceiling will make your room feel more spacious and minimal.
  • Nature is your friend. Natural light and one or two plants will compliment any minimal space.

You may often walk into your bedroom and feel like something is missing or off about the room. Your bedroom should be one of the most peaceful rooms in the house. Unfortunately, due to our 21st-century lifestyle, the bedroom often carries the same kind of stress that other places do. We forget that bedrooms are made for sleeping! The way you decorate your bedroom has a lot to do with the way the room makes you feel. Here, we’ll give you some tips for decorating your bedroom in a way that brings you serenity. We promise after you follow these tips that you’ll be on your way to a more restful, relaxed night’s sleep! As a bonus, if you’re getting ready to move, these tips work really well when it comes to staging a bedroom for a potential home sale! Keep The Room Clean This tip seems fairly obvious. However, as life gets busy, we tend to throw things in corners and pile up clothes. Clutter in itself causes stress. Keep your bedroom organized. Make sure that everything has a place. When we see clutter in a space, our minds can be cluttered as well, and that’s anything but relaxing! Don’t Add Too Many Elements To Your Room Your bedroom should be used for sleeping. There should be a bed and a minimal amount of other “things” within the room. Keep desks and other work related items out of your bedroom in order to make the room a stress-free zone. Your bedroom should serve its purpose- a place for sleeping. A reading chair or love seat may be nice if you have the space for it, but don’t go overboard with extra elements in your bedroom. Stay Away From Bright And Bold Bedding If there’s one room in the house where bright and bold won’t work, it’s the bedroom. Stay away from bedding with heavy patterns and bright colors. If your bedding is too busy, it will cause you inadvertent stress. This is the opposite of what you want in your bedroom. Shut Off Electronics And Keep Them Away From The Bedroom As much as every single one of us is attached to our phones these days, the light from your phone doesn’t help you sleep. Try to find a place in your room far away form the bed to keep your phone, if you must put your phone in the room. Also, keep televisions and computers out of your bedroom as well. The bright lights are a distraction from getting restful sleep. Also, just the presence of these items can cause some stress, as they remind you of less-than relaxing things. The basic principles of Feng Shui are the principle of the five elements, Wood, Fire Earth, Metal and Water. These are the basic building blocks of nature and the environment in Feng Shui. Feng Shui, at it's core, is the belief that you can bring life changing results in to your home by knowing how to apply these elements to your home.

The best way to begin to make your home a Feng Shui home is to clean out the clutter. Based on the practice, de-cluttering your space is a good way to clear out some negative energy. Another important Feng Shui aspect is to have quality air and lighting to balance the energy in your home. Try opening the windows often and have lots of air purifying plants.

Define your Baqua, the Feng Shui energy map of your home. There are eight areas on which to focus using a compass in order to do a reading of your home .Each area of your home is connected to a different 'life area.' For example, the southeast area of your house is connected to the flow of money and energy in your house. If you are looking to increase prosperity to your home you need to increase wood and water in the southeast area of your home. You need to use wood and green and brown colors to bring about abundance in this life area. Contrarily, the east is connected to family and health and the use of the wood element and lush plants in this area will help bring about health.

It is best to express Feng Shui elements in a subtle way that is visually pleasing and will work well within your home.

Candles can make a home look inviting, cozy and warm. They can also give a glow to many people’s skin tones. Candles come in many sizes, shapes and scents. Burning of candles during a showing can make the home feel warm and inviting making the buyer feel relaxed and calm. Try to pick out colors like maroon (cinnamon) orange (pumpkin) these scents are soothing and relaxing scents and will help make the potential sellers feel like home. The placing of the candles is very important. The best places to put them are in the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen table, window sills, and fireplace mantel. If you have a fireplace, lighting a fire is a sure way to give that room a warm and welcoming feeling. Everybody loves a fireplace and your buyers will too. Bake something delicious smelling. The Real Estate experts swear by the just baked smell when showing a home. It makes your potential buyers feel right at home. Things like Apple pie; chocolate chip cookies or fresh baked bread all will create that warm and inviting feeling. Family photos in the home make your home feel like a house full of love. Potential buyers who see photos of a family having fun, and enjoying life in their home will create a sense of a home that has a lot of memories and love. Bottom line, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere can help you sell your home.

Where you place your furniture can make a big difference. It sets the mood and tone for that room.

Most homes are filled with furniture-arranging challenges. Follow these simple tips to turn your design dilemmas into successful arrangements.

1. Take Measurements

The first step in arranging a space is to know the size. Determine the dimensions by measuring with a tape measure. You will want to know the dimensions before shopping for any furniture. If the room is not square you may want to also do a drawing to bring shopping with you.

Make sure to also measure the doorways, dimensions of the hallways, and stairs that lead into the space. You will want to make sure any purchases you make will be able to fit into the room.

2. Mix It Up

Choose furniture of different volumes; each piece of furniture has a height, depth and width mix up the pieces to create an interesting look. If you want a modern or peaceful feel keep the volumes of the pieces similar.

3. Remember Scale

The size of pieces should be relative to the space. If you are furnishing an older home with smaller rooms adding large overstuffed furniture makes the room feel crowded and out of place. Alternatively, if the room is large having small pieces seems odd.

4. Create Relationships

Furniture and accessories have relationships with other items in the space. You will want to create balance; it could be symmetrical or asymmetrical balance. Asymmetry is an imbalance. For example, place two similar accessories of slightly different sizes next to each other. Symmetry would be two accessories that are the same next to each other.

5. Split it Up

All furniture arrangements take on a certain form or totality. For example, if you have a large rectangular spaces it can be split into separate forms or spaces. Think of creating zones within a room; one zone could be for the media area and another for conversation.
